Labour Day

Labour day

Labour Day is an annual holiday, celebrating the economic and social achievements of workers all around the world.

Labour Day in Serbia, popularly known as the 1st of May is celebrated as national holiday, as well as the 2nd of May. Workers in Serbia always have work-free day on the 1st of May but the 2nd was usually normal working day as any other, except for those who work in government's institutions (schools, hospitals, local authorities etc.). Starting this year 2nd of May will be also non-working one for all workers.

Despite the economic crisis or a lousy weather, the holiday is celebrated each year at numerous resorts and tourist centers with the inevitable barbecue, plenty of drinks and music. It’s a custom that people organize one day trip out of the city and try to spend as much time in the nature. As noted above, a bad weather never spoils plans and the large number of green destinations is full on the 1st of May.

If you have the opportunity to spend this holiday in Serbia, get ready to enjoy in grill specialties, pork and lamb roast, beer and rakija. As you can see, if you do not drink or you’ve just started a diet, the atmosphere will not be the same for you. Fear not, in addition to an abundant offering of food and drink, the 1st of May is also about wide range of sports activities and games suitable for every kind of weather.

This year, as a good weather and the temperature up to 27 degrees is expected, it is best to spend the holiday in nature.

If you call Belgrade your hometown, it’s a good chance you’re going to Avala, Kosutnjak, Topcider or Ada on the 1st of May. Topcider and Kosutnjak are big green areas and urban neighborhoods with a location that makes them a bit isolate, romantic and a perfect pick for the 1st of May celebration. Ada Ciganlija remains one of the most visited places in Belgrade when it comes to celebrating Labour Day, so free benches and places for tents and grills are getting occupied early in the morning. Avala, on the other hand, is a traditional picnic resort of the Belgraders having the most amazing view of the entire city. Of course, be prepared for a crowd, lots of noise and a festive mood. Taking into account surfaces which are possible camping areas, please try to be responsible for your own trash disposal and other personal items you bring with you.

Traditional celebration of Labour Day will be also organized in many places in Vojvodina, where one of the most popular destinations, according to experiences from previous years, will be the Palic Lake. The celebration of Labour Day will include variety of entertainment, sports and musical programs. Also, for young people looking for fun we recommend Palic lake where the Trenchtown festival will be held from 30 April to 2 May.
