Republic of Serbia has the network of state roads of I and II category of value estimated at US $ 13 billion. Serbia is a European country with medium population density and well developed road network.
Road network is situated on altitudes spanning from 30 meters (Negotin) up to 1,700 meters (Golija).
It is estimated that 40% of road network length is on altitudes over 600 meters. Asphalt carriageways of state roads of I and II category were constructed during the period from 1962 to 1985, where many routes kept old alignments so that asphalt was placed over the existing crushed stone.
During the same period the most significant routes were constructed after designs so that those sections got better elements of vertical and horizontal alignment.
Road network of the Republic of Serbia in the total length of 40,845 km consists of:
- 5,525 km of state roads of I category
- 11,540 km of state roads of II category and
- 23,780 km of local roads
On the network there are:
- 498 km of toll motorways and
- 136 km of toll semi-motorways
On the level of the entire road network, two fifths of the sections have crushed stone and earth carriageways.
In the Republic of Serbia, 32 % of I and II category roads are over 20 years old, and only 14% are up to 10 years of age.
Because of long lasting insufficient investment in road maintenance and reconstruction, current condition of the road network is not satisfactory.
Bridges and Tunnels
On the roads in the Republic of Serbia (without the territory of Kosovo), there are 2,638 bridges in the total area of about 800,000 m2.
Out of them:
- 215 bridges are situated on motorways
- 996 bridges are situated on state roads of I category and
- 1427 bridges are situated on state roads of II category.
Undercoated value of all bridges is estimated at US$ 1 billion.
Bridges vary in age, shape and construction type they are made of timber, stone, concrete, prestressed concrete, steel; their static systems, spans and lengths differ from 5 to 2212 meters, which is the length of the bridge over the Danube at Beska.
Republic of Serbia has 11 big bridges, namely 7 bridges over the river Danube and 5 bridges over the river Sava.
Because of long lasting insufficient investment in bridge maintenance and reconstruction, current condition of bridges is not satisfactory.
