Health care system in Serbia

Health care system in Serbia is now under the control of the government (Ministry of Health and Environmental Protection) as well as few non-governmental organizations.

It’s organized and run by three institutions-The Republic Health Insurance Institute, The Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut Public Health Institute and the Ministry of Health. Medical facilities are divides into three levels:

  • Primary (Health care centre). “Dom zdravlja” Takes patients without referral and send him/her to the hospital when their medical problem needs specialist opinion. The health centers provide public health surveillance, tuberculosis programmes, physical and occupational therapy, maternity care, child health care and dental care. They also provide emergency medical aid as well as laboratory, radiology, etc. but such services must be paid for.
  • Secondary (Hospital) “Bolnica” 77 hospitals in Serbia provide infirmary and hospital treatments Hospitals require cash payments for their services, and do not accept health insurance as compensation. In the hospitals emergency care is free for everyone with departments open non-stop all year
  • Tertiary (Clinic centres, health clinics, institutes, clinical hospitals). There are four Clinical centers in Serbia (in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis and Kragujevac)

Public hospitals have 24-hour accident and emergency departments, where medical treatment for both residents and non-residents is free-of-charge. In case of emergency, dial 94. Doctors (doktor) and medical staff in state-run hospitals are professional and reliable and you won‘t need to worry about their skills if you should become ill. Doctors are the first point of contact with the state health system. Citizens can register with the doctor of their choice. Citizens will be charged a symbolic fee every time they visit the doctor.

Also, for those in need for it, you could check out Tourist guide for persons with disability issued by the Tourist Organization of Belgrade. It could be helpful in the first few months.
